Throughout history, jewelry has always been used as a symbol of affection. It was often exchanged between loved ones embarking on long sea voyages, going to war, or as gifts for weddings, anniversaries, and mourning.
A particular phrase became popular in the 1900s, taken from a poem written by Rosemonde Gérard for her beloved husband Edmond Rostand, the famous author of Cyrano de Bergerac: "Moins qu'hier, plus que demain". This French love phrase translates to "I love you more than yesterday but less than tomorrow," a beautiful expression that represents an ever-growing love.
Although this phrase wasn’t initially popular when the poem was first published, its fondness grew when the renowned Lyonnais jeweler, Alphonse Augis (marked on jewelry as A.Augis), created medallions engraved with the phrase.
Variations of these charms and pendants have been found with gemstones such as diamonds and rubies set in the plus and minus signs, often complemented by enameled backgrounds.
